To calculate this average, we identify all wounds/ulcers that are treated with a given “skin substitute,” count the total number of product applications to each wound and divide that by the number of wounds. For example, if SkinSub1 was applied five times to Wound A, two times to Wound B, and 7 times to Wound C, then its average number of applications is 4.6. The data for this graph were collected from all practice settings (e.g., hospital-based outpatient departments and “mobile” practices), although many products are only used in the “mobile/office-based” setting. The graph always shows the last 12 months and since the graph is updated monthly, it does not reflect a specific calendar year.
The vertical line representing 8 is significant because the still-suspended Local Coverage Determination (LCD) proposed a limit of 8 per ulcer for diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and Venous Leg Ulcers (VLUs). Even though the LCD is not active, we were curious to see how that limit related to the average number of applications for each product, regardless of wound/ulcer type.

This graph is not intended to provide insights into the comparative effectiveness of products. The graph depicts patterns of utilization and not clinical effectiveness. Utilization is impacted by practitioner habits, which may vary dramatically (e.g., how long practitioners provide the standard of care before starting CTPs, when practitioners stop using CTPs once healing is likely, whether certain products are reserved for more difficult wounds, etc.). This graph does not provide insights into wound/ulcer diagnosis, size, or severity. More detailed insights can be obtained from the many other reports available on the Intellicure Analytics platform.
